Mainland Tanzania and Zanzibar operate under separate trademark registration frameworks.
In Mainland Tanzania, trade and service marks are administered by the Business Registrations and Licensing Agency (BRELA) under the Trade and Service Marks Act, Cap. 326. BRELA’s statutory functions include the registration of trade and service marks.
Zanzibar maintains its own industrial property system administered by the Business and Property Registration Agency (BPRA). BPRA separately provides for trademark applications, oppositions, renewals and changes of ownership.
A business seeking protection across both jurisdictions should therefore consider its Mainland and Zanzibar rights separately rather than assuming that registration in one automatically provides the required protection in the other.
